Fairfax Earns VA Honor Band Status for Fourth Year

Congratulations to everyone in the FHS Band program on three great performances at our District Performance March 8-10, 2012.

The Concert Band played their best performance of the year and ended with a Superior" rating from all but one judge! The Symphonic Band played a great concert and ended up with a rating of "Excellent" from the same VERY tough judging panel. I was (and still am) very proud of that performance, and I know that the challenge of going Grade V with them was the right call even if we came up just a little short of our goal. I am certain that we were all stretched as musicians and will be better for it.

The Wind Ensemble turned in a very emotion-filled performance and they earned straight "Superior" ratings. The music selections for them were polar opposites and both took the band to places they had not yet been. In 14 years of doing this and over 20 bands, I'm not sure I've ever had a band really go for it the way that Wind Ensemble did yesterday. I've had "cleaner" performances to be sure, but I don't think I've ever been that proud of a group coming through when it counted. We were DEFINTELY a "2" last Wednesday, and DEFINITELY a "1" on Saturday.

By virtue of that Superior Rating, and the Marching Band's Superior Rating last October, I am pleased to say that Fairfax HS will be a VA Honor Band for the 4th consecutive year!

I hope that the students and parents understand what a great accomplishment this is, and how truly happy I am to be the band director here at Fairfax.
